Warning: flashing Christmas lights ahead! There is no argument that we are headed into my FAVORITE (not to mention, most hectic) times of year. That’s right, with Thanksgiving a mere 3 weeks away and Christmas at it’s heels, the holidays become the busiest time of year- especially for moms. Let’s be real, we are the ones in charge of everything from our families, our homes, and our jobs; which may or may not BE your home and kids. I know I can hardly remember what I have lunch (if I actually find the time to eat lunch). Now let’s add the meal planning for 30 of our closest family and friends, hanging Christmas lights, playing Santa’s elf before the crack of dawn the day after Thanksgiving, and speaking of elf; making sure that darn thing is moved before the kids wake up in the morning. While I can’t snap my fingers and make your holiday season less busy, I can share with you a couple of tricks that help my family and I survive the most wonderful time of year!
Be prepared!
Gather all your supplies. This includes the wrapping paper, gift tags, tape and scissors. I typically plan a wrapping theme the previous year by purchasing wrapping paper and tags I find on clearance right after the holidays. Tape always seems to go MIA in our house; I’m convinced we have a monster that thrives on that clear, sticky goodness. Planning does not just stop there. For me this process begins in August (if not sooner), around the same time Vera puts on their 50% sale. Yes, I do Christmas shopping during the summer- don’t judge!! With all my nieces and nephews, and siblings birthdays falling in this holiday season, I can’t afford not to get a jump on it. Honestly, it works in my favor. The “hot” items (as said by top toy companies) have just been faced on the shelves (so there is still stock), you aren’t being run over by grandma and her cane, endcaps are packed with clearance and your bank account isn’t seeing the Red.
Baking!
I’ve bared witness to my mom planning Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, NYE, and New Years Day. I understand the chaos, stress and expectations of hosting not one but 5. That’s like a dinner party every night of the week for one full week! I don’t think I could handle that. Maybe I could (anyone looking to borrow 3 toddlers?) Start stocking your pantry with everything you’ll be needing to bake the family favorites. I’m notorious for waiting until the night before, ok fine; I’m notorious for waiting until the morning I’m driving over to my mom’s to pick up my bags of sugar and pure vanilla extract to make our dozens of holiday cookies. In the past couple of years, I’ve actually heeded my own advice. Besides, this will make for happier children and I’m actually able to enjoy the process. Don’t forget cookie dough can be frozen! (So can sweet potatoes, cranberries, and holiday pies). So don’t think twice about mixing up your dough and freezing it until you are ready to bake.
My favorite holiday survival tip…
Take a couple of minutes for you! This does NOT mean locking yourself in a room wrapping gifts! #Guilty. So, for me that’s a pedicure and a cup of coffee. After all, it is #RedCupSeason.
Hoping these tips will help gear you up for a happy holiday season. I always have more fun when I’m prepared and stress free. Keep your mind clear and heart happy. There is so much joy in the coming weeks that go beyond presents under a tree. I can not wait to see the magic in my kids eyes this season.
XO,
Melissa
